BUDGET HOTELS ON THE CÔTE D’AZUR
Hôtel WindsoR, Nice
Less than 10 minutes’ walk from the Gare de Nice-Ville and an easy stroll from the Mediterranean sea, the four-star 1930s Hôtel WindsoR is surprisingly affordable and an artistic retreat in the city. Each year an artist is invited to decorate the hallway and the rooms are decorated by different artists meaning they all have a different style. Behind the hotel is a tropical garden with a small swimming pool and private tables set among the palm trees. Double rooms start at €89.
Hôtel B. Lodge, Saint-Tropez
By all means don your haute couture to saunter around Saint-Tropez, but don’t feel inclined to shell out for a hotel with a designer price tag when the Hôtel B. Lodge is at your disposal. As if to prove the point, it is situated a few steps from the famous Hôtel Byblos (see below), a favourite hangout for the rich and famous. Although the rooms are small, they offer a clean, black and white decor and an en-suite shower. The Barock bar downstairs is a great place to sit and watch the fashionistas go by. Hôtel Nice Excelsior, Nice
Set away from the busy centre on a serene and leafy backstreet, Hôtel Nice Excelsior is well-positioned; a 15-minute walk from the main square, Place Masséna, a 20-minute drive from the airport and right next to the railway station. It inhabits a handsome 1898 townhouse with its light stone walls and wrought-iron balconies. In the lobby, black and white photos revealing Nice in its 1920s heyday adorn the walls, while postcard prints cover the carpet. Each of the four floors is decorated according to a different mode of travel: train, plane, boat and motor car. At the back of an ivy-clad building, the secluded courtyard is shaded by a palm tree and has an outside bar. Doubles start at €95.

Hôtel Suisse, Nice
One of the best views in Nice is from the eastern end of the Promenade des Anglais, and by booking a stay at the Hôtel Suisse you can enjoy it from the comfort of your bed. This four-star hotel has an excellent view of the Mediterranean, with most of its 39 rooms offering panoramas across the Baie des Anges. You can enjoy an aperitif in the bar before venturing out for dinner in one of the many restaurants in Nice’s old town. Hôtel Negresco, Nice
With its pearly white façade and ice-cream pink dome, the palatial Hôtel Negresco on the Promenade des Anglais is an iconic symbol of Nice’s glamorous heyday. Opened in 1912, the hotel lives up to the glitz of its well-heeled visitors; marble columns and gilded ceilings are gloriously flamboyant, while an art and sculpture collection provides a lavish montage of French cultural history. The 96 rooms and 21 suites are decked in period furniture and the two-Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Chantecler, serves refined Provençal dishes complemented by wines from a 15,000-bottle cellar. Château le Cagnard, Cagnes-sur-Mer
This 15th-century château forms part of the city walls of Haut-de-Cagnes, the historic area of Cagnes-sur-Mer, and will be a favourite among art-lovers. Not only was the village an inspiration to artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, but the château itself boasts some impressive works of art as part of its decor. The four-star hotel was completely renovated in 2012, and has 28 rooms and suites, each named after a famous artist. SPLASH OUT
Villa Marie, Saint-Tropez
Nestled on the edge of a pine forest overlooking fields of vines and the turquoise waters of the Bay of Pampelonne, the five-star Villa Marie offers unbeatable views of the Côte d’Azur. Just two kilometres from Saint-Tropez, the hotel is close enough to explore the glitzy resort’s markets and nightspots, using the hotel’s free shuttle service, but far enough away to get some peace and quiet. The luxurious property is built in the style of an Italian villa and is set in immaculate grounds with a Provençal garden, sun-dappled terraces and a turquoise lagoon pool. Hotel Byblos, Saint-Tropez
Set out on the hillside, overlooking Saint-Tropez, Hôtel Byblos has been part of the Côte d’Azur resort’s glamorous lifestyle for nearly half a century. The hotel was inaugurated by Brigitte Bardot and her husband Gunter Sachs in 1967 and the celebrity guest list has since included Mick Jagger and Pink Floyd. In June 2012, Hôtel Byblos was given palace hotel status which marks out exceptional five-star hotels. The hotel is set out over five levels and the focal point is the pool, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The rooms are lavish and the hotel is decorated in Mediterranean colours and traditional styles. The hotel is open April till October and double rooms start at €440.
