These are the most pet-friendly places to visit in France

A new poll has revealed the Top 100 pet-friendly places to visit around the world which includes four sites in France

A survey carried out by trustedhousesitters.com quizzed its members about 54,000 different locations to find the most pet-friendly. While the Eden Project in Cornwall came out top, France wasn’t far behind with Verteuil-sur-Charente making number eight on the list.

Verteuil-sur-Charente

Located in the Poitou-Charentes region, Verteuil-sur-Charente was described by many members as a “fairytale town”. This beautiful riverside commune, in south-west France, is perfect for a relaxing stroll with your canine friend alongside you.

Make sure to take in the watermill situated beneath the castle and the Saint-Médard church which is home to a magnificent statue from the 16th century.

Pont du Gard

Next on the list for France, at number 28, is Pont Du Gard, near Nîmes, described as a ‘master of engineering’which winds over 50km through the mountains.

It is the most visited ancient monument in France with plenty of marked trails in the surrounding countryside. Though principally known for its unusually large and well-preserved aqueduct, the Pont du Gard is also noted for its remarkable natural beauty with visitors enjoying its peaceful surroundings on the banks of the river Gardon.

La Vallee des Saints

France’s answer to Easter Island, La Vallée des Saints in Brittany, comes in at number 57. Here you will find dozens of statues of Breton saints located on a hillside, not far from Carhaix, with new giants sculpted from granite every year.

The giant 4m-high granite statues each have their own particular style and have been placed on a feudal mound with views stretching out as far as the Monts d’Arrée mountains. Guided tours are organised every day and pets are welcome.

Falaise Castle

The newly-restored Falaise Castle – William the Conqueror’s castle – in the department of Calvados is the last attraction to make the list for France, at number 67. This impressive castle has three keeps, walls and towers which overlook the city of Falaise. The fortification was built by the first Dukes of Normandy, later expanded by William’s descendants and completed by King Philip-Augustus of France.

Visitors can enjoy an immersive family-friendly medieval experience and there are also guided tours in English.
